AppCleaner for Mac
Free macOS uninstaller that finds and removes the support files an application leaves behind when you drag it to the Trash.
Updated July 4, 2026 · Reviewed by SoftNexi Editorial Team, Software research and documentation
Overview
Dragging a Mac app to the Trash removes the bundle but usually leaves preference files, caches, and support folders in your Library. AppCleaner finds those leftovers and offers to delete them with the app.
It is deliberately narrow: a drop target, a list of related files, and a delete button. There is no subscription, no system-optimizer marketing, and no background agent.
The SmartDelete option watches for apps moved to the Trash and offers to clean up their files automatically.
Key features
- Finds preference, cache, and support files belonging to an application
- SmartDelete prompts when an app is moved to the Trash
- Bulk uninstall of multiple applications
- Protection list so system and essential apps are not removed accidentally
System requirements
- Operating system
- Current macOS releases; older builds are archived for previous versions
- Architecture
- Universal build
- Permissions
- May request access to Library folders to list related files
How to install AppCleaner
1. Download the DMG

macOS may ask for permission to read Library folders so related files can be listed.
How to use it
1. Uninstall an app
Drag the application onto the AppCleaner window, review the related files, and click Remove.
2. Enable SmartDelete
Turn it on in preferences so AppCleaner offers to clean up whenever you trash an app.
3. Protect essentials
Use the protection list to prevent accidental removal of apps you rely on.
Safety and privacy
- Download only from freemacsoft.net; the app name is widely imitated by paid cleanup utilities.
- Review the file list before deleting — you are the last check on what gets removed.
- Bundled software
- None.
- Privacy
- Works locally with no account.
Known risks
- Deleting shared support files can affect another application from the same developer, so read the list rather than accepting blindly.
- It is not a substitute for an app's own uninstaller when the vendor provides one.
What's new
3.6.x series
Recent updates have addressed macOS compatibility and Apple silicon support. The developer publishes version notes on the product page.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free and focused on one job
- Finds leftovers Finder does not remove
- SmartDelete integrates with normal habits
- No background service or subscription
Cons
- Shows related files without judging importance
- No cleanup scheduling
- Mac only
- Not a replacement for vendor uninstallers
Verdict
AppCleaner does exactly one useful thing and does not try to sell you a system optimizer. Read the file list before confirming, and it is a safe permanent addition to a Mac.
Frequently asked questions
Is AppCleaner safe to use?
It only deletes what you confirm. The risk comes from approving a list that includes files shared with another app, so review before removing.
Does it need to run in the background?
Only if you enable SmartDelete, which watches for apps moved to the Trash.
