Backup software exists for one reason: to make data loss recoverable. The distinction that matters most is between file-level backup, which copies selected files and folders, and disk imaging, which captures an entire drive byte-for-byte so a failed system can be restored exactly as it was, including the operating system and installed programs.

The 3-2-1 rule is still the most reliable general guidance: keep at least three copies of important data, on two different types of storage, with at least one copy off-site. A cloud backup alone protects against a failed local drive; a local backup alone doesn't protect against fire, theft, or ransomware that encrypts everything it can reach.

What's the difference between backup and sync?

Sync keeps a folder identical across devices in near real time, including deletions — which means a ransomware attack or accidental deletion can propagate to every synced copy. Backup keeps separate historical versions, so you can recover a file as it existed before something went wrong.

Do I need disk imaging if I already back up my files?

File backup protects your documents and photos, but a disk image lets you restore your entire system — OS, installed programs, and settings — after a drive failure, without reinstalling everything from scratch.

How often should I test my backups?

Periodically restoring a sample file or, for disk images, doing a full test restore to spare hardware is the only way to know a backup actually works rather than assuming it does.
